The First
You might be wondering by now.
Why did Emily assume the role of Death? I'm not talking about why she took the job. No no no. It's about why she was offered the job in the first place.
Well it's simple. The last guy went into retirement. It's a simple answer, but that just raises more questions. I'm going to try answer most of them with a little story about Dalutt Mahes.
Dalutt Mahes was born from the first death. Nobody knows how it happened, but it was something truly special. It was the sign that everything had to have an end. Nothing would last forever.
Dalutt looked just like a boy, with bright violet eyes, pure white hair and a smile that could melt even the coldest of hearts.
Soon after his conception God came to meet him.
- Who are you, boy?
- I... I don't know. Who are you?
- I am The Creator, the beginning of everything around you, the Alfa. But you can call me God for short.
- You created me?
- No, boy. I mean not directly. It's kind of complicated. Even I don't really know what happened.
- What did happen?
- I tried to create something, but it... there's no word for it. I got it! It died.
- It "died"?
- It existed, then not.
- Are you sure "it" died? Maybe I'm "it".
- No, my boy. "It" was supposed to be something I like to call "The Universe". A place with a beginning, no end and filled with the most wonderful things in the world. But something went wrong with it's beginning. I might be missing something.
- Maybe an end?
- An end? Don't be foolish. Why would I give it an... Let me check something.
- What?
- I'm going to do it again and use your idea of giving it an end. Come here and let's see if this works.
At that moment God released his creation, a tiny ball that went up in an explosion of color and life.
- Did it die, too?
- No. Quite the opposite. It worked, boy. It worked!
- It's so beautiful.
- You haven't seen nothing yet. By the way, we haven't given you a name yet. I was thinking of two. Which would you prefer, Dalutt or Mahes?
- Can I have both?
- Of course! From now on you will be named Dalutt Mahes.
- I love it! Can I create a Universe, too?
- Dalutt, you will have a much more important role. You will guide my creation after it dies. You will carefully bring it here from inside the universe so that it may live again.
- That sounds hard.
- I will help you in the beginning and down the line it may become a little hard, but I trust you will do a wonderful job.
- I will do my best.
And that's how little Dalutt got his role as Death. He loved his job. He got to travel the universe, meet a lot of interesting living things. Over the time Dalutt feel in love with the little planet called Earth, home of the dinosaurs, humans and art. Most of all he enjoyed the books.
His collection was made up of signed copies and soon to be signed copies. He would read them on his day off. Yes, he did get a day off once in a while. That was the compensation he got from God for the by-products called "sin" and "killing", which made the job much harder for Dalutt. Lucifer tried to tempt him into asking for more days or to quit, but he will always respond with "If I don't guide them, who will?".
Dalutt loved humans. He especially loved the many nicknames they gave him and skeleton representations. Those were the best part, because everyone would be surprised to see him.
But there was a down side to the job. Wars and murder. He hated every intentional death. That's not how things were supposed to happen. He never understood why someone would end someone else's life just to ended. He understood killing for food, but killing when there's a much better alternative. That fact made Dalutt cry, but he always hoped there will come a time when everything would be better.
One sunny afternoon, Dalutt Mahes went to guide the soul of one Kane M. County. He was a skinny guy, with pale skin, short brown hair and smile that could run shivers down your spine. Kane was locked up in a maximum security prison. That day Kane was getting to visit the electric chair, the end of this punishment and day on Earth.
As Kane was waiting for grand finale, Dulatt appeared to him.
- Who are you? asked Kane with a confusing look on his face.
- Death.
- Death? You don't look anything like any Death I ever seen. You must get that a lot.
- I do.
- You kind of remind me of a boy. I think you met him, he said amusingly. Starved to death, burns all over the body and his eyes
- Why did you do it?
- Why did I kill him?
- Why did you kill of them?
- It was fun!
- Fun? You think killing is fun? Dalutt said raising his voice.
- Yes. Since I can remember, I had a good feeling doing it. Even the first one. I may have "accidentally" killed the family cat, but I enjoyed it. Strangling it and feeling it's life stop in my arms. As time went by I moved from small pets to bigger and more trickier, but when I got to humans. My, oh my! They were something else. The screaming, the begging and that look in their eyes.
- You're just sick!
- Aren't we all just a little sick, kid? At least I'm upfront with it.
The time came and Kane was taken to the chair. The whole walk, Kane described every thing he had done in gruesome details, with a sense of pride in his voice and Dalutt was starting to feel anger, something he never felt before. Sitting in the chair, Kane looked at Dalutt and said:
- Did I said something to upset you, dear boy? Did I make Death angry?
- You're going to pay for this! I'll take you straight to Hell!
- I know I'm going there, but I will always remember the look on those faces as I took their life away.
The chair was turned on and as Kane's soul was living his body, Dalutt pushed it back in and kept pushing. Kane's soul was in pain, more pain than anything he would have felt in Hell. When Dalutt snapped out of his rage and realized what he was doing and he stopped, but it was too much. The soul became unstable and shortly it disintegrated. The first soul had died.
God summoned Dalutt to the afterlife.
- What have you done?
- You don't underst
- You killed a soul!
- He deserved that! He ended so many lives! He had to be punished!
- He would have been punished for his in Hell!
- That wouldn't have been enough for him! He enjoyed the idea of going to Hell. You don't know how it is to see so many people get killed by others.
- You think I like that idea? I love them as much as you do.
- So why don't you stop it? You have the power to do it.
- Because they have to learn for themselves to choose the good instead of the evil. They're still young, but they'll get there.
- I've seen them up close. They'll never learn. I lost all hope in humanity. It's war after war, kill after kill.
- Calm down, Dalutt. This anger will destroy you.
- I can't stand it anymore! I don't want to do this anymore!
- But you're the only one who can do this. You were born for it.
- Born for this? Let's face it. My birth was an accident. I wasn't even supposed to exist.
- Dalutt...
- And without me The Universe wouldn't have existed. It's as much my creation as it's yours. If I want to abandon it, I will!
- Please stop!
- Goodbye!
And with that final word, Dalutt Mahes disappeared completely, never to be seen again.
In the end, Dalutt didn't go away because he lost faith in humanity. He did it out of love and fear.
Dalutt loved us much, he left in fear of ever hurting us again.
